For some unknown reason I missed the revival of The X-Men in the 1970s. It passed me by until the stories were reprinted in British Marvel mags a few years later, but even then they never really rang my bell. Could it be because they were in black and white... or could it rather be that because I'd grown up with the original team of mutants, the new group seemed like usurpers to me? (Cyclops apart of course.) Regardless, although I've still never managed to come to terms with subsequent members over the years (Wolverine excepted when in his own mag), I retain a soft spot for the original pupils of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Therefore, I was glad when Marvel UK decided to re-present the early tales in 1983, and I faithfully bought all 17 issues and relived my childhood in the process.
Hard to believe it was over 35 years ago that these comics graced British newsagents, so... for those of you who missed them at the time or who weren't even born then, I thought I'd generously share all 17 covers with you here. The comic was merged into The Mighty Thor weekly (becoming Thor and The X-Men), and we'll be looking at the covers of that title in an upcoming post.
(Note that only five Jack Kirby covers were used throughout the run, though it has to be admitted that the seven John Ridgeway ones are very nice indeed.)
