It's said that all good things must come to an end... and so it came to pass for John Byrne's 62 issue run on The Fantastic Four in 1986. Story-wise, I never thought that the FF's monthly mag ever reached such dizzying heights again, and it's a shame that "The Byrnester" never got a chance to return to the title once he'd moved on from DC Comics' Superman. We'll just have to console ourselves by looking back to the days when FF was one of the "must-have" mags of the moment, and gazing again on the covers of what was once "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine".
A note about annual 18: JB only plotted the issue, but I've included the cover because he actually drew it... unlike number 19, which he wrote and drew but didn't do the cover. He also plotted FF 294, but as the cover (and interiors) was drawn by Jerry Ordway, I've omitted it. It's a mixed-up world in the comic mag business to be sure.
And just for good measure, I've included his cover of the 1984 special edition, for which he also wrote and drew some additional pages.
